THE CITY

Taormina is regarded by many as the most beautiful town in Sicily. It is an old hilltop town full of history and culture with spectacular views of the sea below and of Mt. Etna. Known as the "Pearl of the Mediterranean", Taormina is famous for its beauty, its incredible heritage, its archaeology and architecture, as well as for its reputation in welcoming travellers. Taormina is perfectly situated to offer students easy access to the beautiful and historically important treasures of Sicily.

Taormina is like a treasure chest of history. Walking along its main street, Corso Umberto, and the maze of narrow staircased streets, you'll find beautiful buildings from the Greek and Roman Age, and others in which the Arab and the Norman cultures meld together in a memorable sense of beauty. There are traces of the Byzantine domination and beautiful villas which belonged to the European aristocracy in the 18th and 19th centuries, all in the context of a small town on top of Monte Tauro, overlooking the coastline of the Ionian Sea.

Access to the beaches is very easy. A cable-car connects Taormina to the beaches. Isola Bella', the Bay of Mazzarrò, the Bay of Giardini Naxos and the Beach of Spisone are among the most famous beaches in Italy.

Taormina plays a fundamental role as one of the most important archaeological locations in Italy. In fact, the Greeks, fathers of Italian and European culture, settled their first colony in Italy exactly here in the Bay of Naxos, in 735 BC. Taormina is home to one of the most famous Greek Theatres in the world.
