"FERRAGOSTO" is an
Italian contraction of the Latin "Feriae Augusti" - literally
"Augustus's Holiday" proclaimed by Augustus (Julius Caesar's nephew
and heir and the first Roman Emperor). The "Feriae
Augusti" was originally a full month of continuous
celebration, later reduced to a single day in early August and
subsequently mid-August. The festivals and celebrations
were dedicated to diverse gods and goddesses, typically those
associated with the harvest, the changing of the seasons, and
deities such as Diana protector of youth and goddess of childbirth.
This holiday therefore became associated mainly with "female"
matters of: fertility, maternity and children. At this
time of the year many locals depart to seek cool, clean mountain
retreats or the pleasure of a seaside holiday. August is the
holiday month in Italy, culminating on the 15th
with "Ferragosto" in a tradition that is as old as
the Roman Empire itself. August 15, is one of the most
important Catholic holidays, the Feast of the Assumption.
Catholics celebrate the assumption of the Virgin Mary to Heaven to
be with her son, Jesus. Whether Italians celebrate
"Ferragosto" because of traditional or religious
reasons one thing is certain: There is always plenty of
good food, fun and lots of catching up
with 'amici'.

WORLD'S GREATEST SHAVE
Here at CIS we like to support worthy
charities and the Leukaemia Foundation is one of the most worthy of
all. At the Leukaemia Foundation they raise money to help
people living with leukaemias, lymphomas, myeloma and related blood
disorders, including children who are battling these
diseases. The money raised from the fundraiser will go
towards assisting families in away from home car, transport,
emotional support and towards research into treatments and
cures.
Every year they hold the World's Greatest Shave and this year,
once again, we supported Oggi Hair Studio with their Greatest
Shave Day. Check out a great photo of Salon Owner Lou Fiore
having his hair shaved by one of the local policemen!
* At CIS we
will held a raffle in which the first prize was a Gift
Voucher for a term of Italian Classes!
* At Oggi
Hair Studio they had an exciting day where
lots of people came and got their hair shaved or coloured for
a small donation. On the day there was a Sausage sizzle,
cupcakes and donuts, face painting, head shaving, raffle, silent
auction, jelly bean guess and hair coloring.
In total, over $13,000 was
raised! This broke the record of $5000 last year and made
Oggi Hair Studio the number 1 fundraiser in Australia! Of this
amount, the Centre of Italian Studies made the largest single
donation, raising $1026!
We hope to see you there next
year! Be Brave & Shave!!
