Italian Events in Melbourne

Eros Ramazzotti is coming to Melbourne on Wednesday the 29th October!! There are still tickets available for those interested.

Zucchero is coming to Melbourne for the first time on the 19th November. For tickets and information contact Ticketmaster on 136 100 or go to Mondo Music on Lygon Street.

Lygon Street Festa is on again!!! It will be held on the 15th—16th November, 2008 from 12pm onwards. Saturday students keep an eye out for information about road closures that day!

Liz Caffin: One of our students will be having an art exhibition at Falkner Gallery in Castlemaine. It is called “Prendimi se puoi” (Catch me if you can).

“Iddu e Idda”: An exhibition of Photographic Images and Paintings of the Eolian Islands by Anthony and Jo Casamento.

Ciao a tutti!!! Benvenuti a Term 4!!!

We hope you had a great break or for those who attended, enjoyed the intensive course. A big welcome to all of our new students!! We hope you enjoy your course this term!! Level 1 students will receive VIP cards in class this week. If you do not receive yours, or are new to CIS in a different level, please come to the office and collect one. There are many things happening at CIS and around Melbourne in the lead up to the end of the year and of course, Natale!!

The 27th of October is Pink Ribbon Day to support Breast Cancer. For anyone who is interested CIS is selling merchandise in the office.

Unfortunately, Commeartefo’ Theatre Company’s production “Taxi a due piazze: Run for your wife!” has been cancelled. Mimmo Mangione will still be holding a Workshop about Carnevale for students who are interested (level 6 and up as it is all in Italian) on Wednesday 29th October at 6:00pm. For more information, please come to the office.

Level 5—8 students will be happy to see that we have now introduced conversation only classes with wine and cheese!! If you’re interested in coming along, see page 2 for more information. This is a great opportunity to practise your Italian in a relaxed and social way and there will be a teacher present to facilitate the class and help with any questions you may have. It’s also a chance to meet other students of all levels and have a chat!! Level 1-4 students, don’t worry, we haven’t forgotten about you and plan to start conversation classes for beginners in 2009!

Just a reminder that Tuesday 4th November is Melbourne Cup Day and therefore there will be no classes held that day.

For that week, students are welcome to attend any other class. If you have any questions, or to pick up a timetable come to the office.

We will be having a Study Holiday Information Night on Thursday the 20th November at 7:45pm. If you would like to come along, please book at the office before the 13th November. See page 3 for more information about overseas specials available at the moment, including book and pay by 31st October for 2008 prices in 2009!!

Please book at the office one week before the class. Set topics will be allocated and handouts can be collected at the office one week before the class upon payment. That way you can read up on your vocabulary beforehand!!

We all know how important making a good impression is to Italians!! “Fare la bella figura” means always being “a posto” (in order), clean and well-dressed. But not only this, it also extends to behaviour and traditions. For example, making a good impression and knowing how to behave in any situation. One of our students is in Urbania at the moment and sent us the following email:

Urbania mi piace molto! E piccola ma ci sono tante
cose da fare. Questa fine settimana, abbiamo noleggiato una macchina, e siamo andati a Ravenna a vedere i mosaici magnifici, e ieri sera c'era un concerto di cori a teatro.Oggi abbiamo passato il giorno a Sant’Angelo in Vado- alla Mostra del Tartufo Bianco. Siamo nella stagione del tartufo e qui nelle Marche sono famosi! Ne ho mangiati i neri al ristorante a Urbino, ma i bianchi a 180 euro all'etto sono un po’ cari!

La scuola e molto simpatica, e le insegnanti sono brave. La mattina, facciamo una lezione normale, piu` o meno come al CIS, grammatica, conversazione. articoli di giornale. Il pomeriggio, ci sono attivita` diverse - escursione, film, conversazione.

La vita in famiglia va bene.Leonarda e Francesco sono molto gentili.Anche mangio bene, forse un po troppo.La sera, dopo cena, guardiamo un po la TV, ma devo dire che non ne capisco tanto, ecetto “Chi Vuole Essere Milionario!” La TV italiano e pessima, e le presentatrici!

Teacher Profile: Giuseppe Raffi

Giuseppe has been a teacher at CIS for the past 3 years and is one of our most-loved children’s teachers because of his energy and outgoing personality! He teaches/entertains all the 3-5 year old children on a Saturday morning!! A huge task for anyone!!

Giuseppe was born in Palermo where he completed liceo scientifico and then did his military service in Trapani as a “Bersaglieri” for 1 year. After that he travelled around Europe to beautiful places like Spain and France and then spent 3 years in Northern Italy. He fell in love with an Italo-Australian girl and moved to Australia in 2003. They recently returned to Italy for a well-deserved holiday before the arrival of their Baby Boy in February, 2009.

Giuseppe is also a masseur and loves all kinds of sport, especially cycling. He participated in the “Giro D’Italia” in the under 23’s category in 1996 and in a world championship and 2 italian championship cycling events!!

We would like to congratulate Giuseppe and his wife and we wait in anticipation for the most recent addition to the CIS family!! Auguri!!
